Tribute & Message From The Family

Billy Preston Bates of Marietta, Georgia passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at age 85.

Despite many successes in life, he always believed his greatest achievement to be his family.

He leaves behind his wife of 15 years, Helen Still Bates, and sister, Vickie Poole.

In 1984, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Mary Alice Fugate Bates, after her long, courageous battle with leukemia. He raised 4 children with Mary Alice: Eldest son, Lee and wife Ginny, son Jerry and wife Liz, daughter Laura and husband Philip, and youngest daughter Mary "Boo" Bates.

Billy's grandchildren are: Jordan, Preston, Austin, ( Lee and Ginny ), Tripp ( Jerry and Liz ) and Katie Beth, Kelsey, Davis, Mellie and Macie ( Laura and Philip ).

All nine of his grandchildren adored their PePa and what a grandfather he was!

He also leaves behind his extended family Coye, Karen & McKenzie Mann, who were a very integral part of his life.

He was also loved by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Born in Darlington, South Carolina, Billy attended St. John's High School in Darlington, South Carolina and attended North Greenville Community College. He later attended the Naval Academy, before graduating from Furman University. During the Korean War, he served in the Army Security Agency and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany.

Billy had a diverse career which included work at Eastern Airlines, Standard Oil Company, and Watkins Service Company. His last job title was Singles Director at First United Methodist Church of Marietta, where he worked for 10 years prior to retirement.

Billy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marietta for over 30 years. During that time he served in a variety of roles: Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Education Commission, the Council on Ministries and the Administrative Board.

Billy Bates was a man who loved well and was well-loved by all who knew him. He was a follower of Jesus and lived his life to serve others. He was a devoted husband to both Mary Alice and Helen. He was an incredible father and when his children had to cope with the painful loss of their mother, Billy was their rock and guided them lovingly through that difficult time. He told anyone who would listen that he was " a blessed man ", boasting that he had four children and each one lived within 30 minutes of him!

Billy Bates has left a profound legacy in each of us through his love and selfless acts of service. His presence in our lives will be greatly missed but our memories of him dearly cherished.

Friends and family we would cherish your presence in celebrating the life of our dad, Billy Bates.

Dad loved missions- he drove multiple bus loads of folks on mission trips to be the hands of Jesus and it would have brought him much joy to see his family and friends participating in God's kingdom like this.
